Turn a List of Questions into a Google Form (Word, Google Docs or ChatGPT)

Short answer

Google Forms can't import a Word or Google Docs file of questions: its Import questions button only copies questions from another Google Form. To avoid retyping, paste your questions into SurveysAI, add each question's type in brackets (Check & Preview helps with this), sign in with Google and generate the form. It is created in your own Google account.

Your options

  • Retype the questions in Google Forms. Fine for five questions, tedious for thirty.
  • Gemini's Help me create in Google Forms can use a file from your Google Drive as a source for a draft, on eligible paid Google plans (see the comparison).
  • Paste the text into a text-to-form tool. This guide shows how with SurveysAI.

Step by step

  1. Copy your questions. From Word, Google Docs, a PDF or an answer from ChatGPT or Claude.
  2. Paste them into SurveysAI. Paste the text into the editor on the SurveysAI homepage. Keep the title on the first line.
  3. Mark the question types. End each question with its type in brackets, such as [multiple_choice] or [paragraph], and put answer options on lines starting with a hyphen.
  4. Click Check & Preview. SurveysAI checks the format. If something is off, it suggests a fixed version with AI and shows what changed, together with a preview of the form.
  5. Sign in and generate. Sign in with Google and click Generate Form. The form is created in your own Google account.
  6. Check it in Google Forms. Open the form, read it once as a respondent and submit a test response before you share it.

Example: from a Word list to a Google Form

A typical list of questions, as people write it in a document:

Library visitor survey
1. How often do you visit the library?
a) Weekly b) Monthly c) Rarely
2. Which services do you use? (tick all that apply)
Borrowing books, study rooms, events, online catalogue
3. How satisfied are you overall? (1 = not at all, 5 = very)
4. What should we improve?

The same questions in the SurveysAI format, ready to paste:

Library Visitor Survey
> Thank you for helping us improve the library. It takes about 2 minutes.

*How often do you visit the library? [multiple_choice]
- Weekly
- Monthly
- Rarely

Which services do you use? [checkbox]
- Borrowing books
- Study rooms
- Events
- Online catalogue

*How satisfied are you overall? [scale] low=1 high=5 low_label="Not at all" high_label="Very"

What should we improve? [paragraph]

What changed:

  • Numbers and letters are gone. Each answer option is on its own line, starting with a hyphen.
  • “Tick all that apply” became [checkbox]; a single answer is [multiple_choice].
  • “1 = not at all, 5 = very” became a [scale] with labels at both ends.
  • The open question became [paragraph], a long-answer field.
  • An asterisk (*) makes a question required. The > line under the title becomes the form description.

Questions from ChatGPT or Claude

If an assistant wrote your questions, you can ask it to output them in this format straight away, for example:

Rewrite these questions for SurveysAI: title on the first line, each question ending with its type in square brackets ([text], [paragraph], [multiple_choice], [checkbox], [dropdown] or [scale]), and each answer option on its own line starting with "- ".

Or skip copying altogether: connect SurveysAI to Claude or ChatGPT and the assistant creates the form for you.

What doesn't carry over

  • Pictures in the document. Add each image on its own line with a public image link, for example Our logo [image] url="https://example.com/logo.png" alt="Company logo".
  • Tables. Turn them into separate questions or a grid question.
  • Formatting such as bold text or colours.
  • “If No, skip to question 7” instructions. Google Forms skips whole sections, not single questions. Start a [section] where the respondent should land and end the multiple-choice or dropdown option with [go:Section name]. Skipped parts can't merge back into a shared path later, and the question with the jump can't be on the last page; the Form Formatting Guide has the details.
  • Long forms on the free plan. The free plan allows up to 10 items per form; the Pro plan has no limit.

Visual summary

Turn your list of questions into a Google Form. Google Forms can't import a document. Paste your list on the website and add the parts marked in yellow. The card shows a numbered list of questions from a document and the same questions rewritten in the SurveysAI format, with the added question types, asterisks and dashes highlighted.

Frequently asked questions

Can I import a Word document directly into Google Forms?

No. Google Forms' “Import questions” only copies questions from another Google Form. To avoid retyping, paste the text into a text-to-form tool such as SurveysAI.

Do I have to learn a special format?

Only the basics: title on the first line, the question type in brackets at the end of each question, and options on lines starting with a hyphen. Check & Preview fixes common formatting problems and shows you what it changed.

Can I convert a PDF?

Yes, if you can select and copy its text. Paste the copied questions into the editor and mark the question types. Scanned PDFs need text recognition first.

Is there a limit on the number of questions?

On the free SurveysAI plan, each form can have up to 10 items (questions, sections, text blocks, images and videos all count). The Pro plan has no limit.

Is my survey text stored?

Yes. The survey text you create is stored in your SurveysAI account, so you can find and reuse your forms later.
